Hazel Ilene Hyde was born September 19, 1936, the first-born child of Lavern and Mildred (Rector) Hyde.
On Christmas Eve, in 1950, she received as a gift from her parents, a little red 5-year diary which, for the next few years, she faithfully wrote in every day.
This blog is a transcription of Hazel’s little red diary. Follow along for a peek into the life of a 1950’s rural farm girl as she wends her way through high school toward graduation and married life. You’ll get some laughs, shed a few tears, and if you’re old enough, do a little nodding in agreement over some of the memories it’ll bring up for you.
The diary entries begin HERE.
I enjoy every part of your website and now I’ve got my grandma’s diary out (early 40’s). Sure interesting. We’re about done calving and getting cattle to summer pasture in the next week. I’m always quilting – about to finish one (I’m on the border). Wish you lived closer – hope to see you again one of these times. Yvonne
Good afternoon,
I was wondering if you knew when the book might be available to buy?
Thanks

You had indicated at the very beginning that by the last block, the sad reason for her early passing would be explained, yet I have read all the parts available to her diary and ordered the book, but I haven’t ready why she died so young. She reminds me so much of my older Sister, a young Mother who also died far too young. They even resemble one another in their youth.
I have just discovered this site and adore it. I am a quilter and enjoy the 50’s style of quilts. Also, my beloved grandmother’s name was Hazel Irene and her only daughter’s name is Barbara. Oddly enough, the diary entries made me feel closer to her, even though these are different women. Thank you 🙂
