The big day is here already! Are you excited about getting started on Ornament #1? Did you get all your materials together and get everything ready to go? (If not, go HERE to get started.)
Before I show you the ornament and its options, I first want to provide you with some links that might be helpful.
I’ve written the pattern instructions on the assumption that you already know how to do appliqué and embroidery, so you don’t need very detailed instruction on methods for either of those things. However, if such is not the case, I’ve written about how I do my method of needle-turn hand appliqué in these posts:
There is also some information on the fusible method of appliqué included in the first post mentioned, if you need help with that.
I made my hanging strings for my ornaments using a bias tape maker because it’s just so darn easy! While you can use whatever method you want to make your hanging strings, I have a tutorial here on using the bias tape maker, so check it out and see if you might like to do yours like I did mine:
And for help with embroidery, I always recommend this site — it’s my favorite online resource for embroidery stitches and information:
So . . . here we go . . . Vintage Christmas Ornament #1!
You have several options with this ornament. Shown here first is the embroidery version for the stitchery wall quilt:
I’ve shown you how I did mine, but you can use whatever colors and stitches you like to decorate your ornament and make it all your own.
For the appliqué version, you can piece the ornament body and then appliqué it down:
Or you can appliqué all of it. And add in extra elements, if you wish (just another option). Notice I put this one on a print background, too — I’m just full of options! (altho that’s not what My Cowboy says I’m full of!)
Or you can use rickrack as an embellishment, instead of using fabric to make your stripes. Pretty ribbon would work here as well . . . even more options!
So there you have it. Lots of options! Options, options, everywhere!
The pattern is available as a PDF instant download in Hazel’s Mercantile for the bargain price of $1.75. It has all the instructions for all the versions of the ornament shown above, along with full-size templates, and all the information I could think of to include. So go download it and print off your templates and get started!
And as always, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me and ask. I’ll be happy to provide clarification, or make corrections (which I hope aren’t necessary), and answer any questions you have. Whenever I hit “publish”, I always feel like I’m forgetting something important, so if you notice anything missing, be sure and let me know!
Happy Stitching!
Thanks so much for this! I have my first block prepped and ready to stitch!
This looks like such fun!
Love this Shelly. I presently have one of Hazel’s embroidered blocks as my header. I’ve received lots of comments on it.
